What are the Gowda Vokkaliga Marriage Traditions and Rituals?
Predominantly, Karnataka is occupied by the Hindus, and hence it is better to look over the traditions of Hindu marriages in the state. The Gowda Vokkaliga matrimony traditions and rituals resemble the typical South Indian style of wedding with pre-wedding, wedding, and post-wedding ceremonies. As usual, a wedding starts with the selection of the bride and the groom. Since most of the regions are still rural and traditional, mostly, the parents will decide their children’s future partners. They will use the variety of options available to select the fiancĂ© of their kids.
Some of these options will be
getting some referrals from relatives or friends, selecting one from the
relatives or neighborhood, and accessing a marriage bureau website. Among all
the options, a matrimony website will give wider options to choose from, and
people are finding it very helpful in terms of matchmaking. You can segregate
people based on various factors like the region and caste.
If you search through a Gowda Vokkaliga matrimony, you
will get to see the details of persons looking for marriage in that specific
community. After the selection of the bride and the groom, the wedding
ceremonies will start. Karnataka weddings also occur in three stages –
pre-wedding, wedding, and post-wedding. In this article, let us discuss some of
the pre-wedding and wedding traditions of Karnataka Hindus.
Pre-wedding
ceremony
Nischay Tamulam – It is the
official announcement of the wedding to all the relatives and friends. The
process is similar to the engagement ceremony at other weddings. Both the
family members will gather at a temple or a house to decide the date of the
wedding and other vital proceedings.
Turmeric purification – On the
wedding day, the bride and the groom will sit at their respective house, and
the family members will apply turmeric paste mixed with other holy items on
their bodies. The process is believed to purify the couple before the
wedding.
Kashi Yatra – It is a fun
activity done on the wedding day by the groom. He will act like he has fed up
with all the formalities of the wedding and decided to find peace in permanent
bachelorship. He will pack up his things and starts his journey to Kasi to
attain moksha. Then the bride’s uncle will convince him to change his mind and
marry the bride.
Ganesh pooja – Then, the groom,
along with his family will pray to Lord Ganesh at the wedding venue to help
with the wedding proceedings to finish without obstacles.
Wedding
Ceremony
The wedding will start with the
Paatha pooja ceremony in which the bride’s father will wash the groom’s feet in
the mandap. Then the bride and the groom will sit beside the fire with a
priest. After some chanting, the groom will tie a Mangalsutra, around the
bride’s neck, thus completing the marriage. Then, the couple will take seven
rounds around the sacred fire. The final event of the wedding is the feast to
the relatives and guests of the function.
